Laura Linton – Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
A self-proclaimed “carb queen,” Laura recounted how difficult it was for her to stick to a plan to help her with her satiety levels. No matter how much she ate, it was difficult to keep from feeling hungry. “It used to be constant, all day, every day,” Laura recalls.
On top of all this, Laura was also leading a busy career and taking care of a young child, so it was difficult to find the time to prepare meals. She developed gestational diabetes and became pre-diabetic. Laura decided enough was enough and enrolled in GIThrive. With her dietitian, Laura took small steps to improve her gut health. It began with eating nutritional snacks when she drank sodas and evolved to trying new foods she liked through new recipes.
She also received help from her health coach, who taught her about “microchanges,” which are small changes in daily life that contribute to an even bigger goal. For example, to get more exercise in, Laura’s health coach suggested she take a few minutes to go up and down the stairs daily. Laura’s gut health and life improved to the point where she eventually recommended GIThrive to her boss, who suffers from diabetes.
Chuck Stickelman – Mansfield, Ohio
Chuck suffered various GI issues, such as bloating, vomiting and diarrhea throughout his lifetime. He also struggled with weight management and high blood pressure. Chuck had met with all sorts of experts and professionals, but he never found success in improving his gut health.
“I’ve gone back and forth between just resigning myself to the fact that my gut was always going to be an issue, and on the other side, [I’d] get really frustrated,” Chuck says about his past experiences. After he signed up with GIThrive, however, everything began to change for the better.
Chuck admitted that he initially had no expectations and did not think GIThrive would have any positive or negative outcomes. But he was surprised at how impactful his health coach was. “The way she presents the science behind it…I like that,” Chuck comments. He’s learned to identify foods that were triggers for him. His dietitian also helped him be more excited about cooking and trying different foods and incorporating more fiber in his diet. He was delighted–and relieved–that it was all working.
With the help of GIThrive, Chuck lost 70 pounds, and his gut is no longer in distress. His weight is steadily coming off, and his GI issues have lessened. He now looks forward to the next challenge and appreciates the knowledge he gained from his experience with GIThrive.
Mimi Pineiro – Georgia
Mimi is a colorectal cancer survivor. Due to her cancer and cancer treatments, she has battled digestive issues, such as bloating, gas, and nausea. She enrolled in GIThrive as part of her company’s benefits in hopes of finding the help she needed to improve and maintain her gut health.
With the help of her dietitian and health coach, Mimi could find the right diet that helped her through chemotherapy and clinical trials. “Not only that, they also helped with emotions and [mental health] because the GI is connected to a lot of our emotions,” Mimi says. “And I learned all of this through the programs.”
Her new diet changes relieved her nausea and stopped inflammation, bloating, and gassiness. During the times she did not feel well, she was able to call her dietitian and health coach, and they provided the advice and support she needed to stay on track. For example, if Mimi felt nauseous, her dietitian told her which foods were better for her and which foods to avoid.
Mimi’s dietitian took her medical history and conditions into account, then worked with Mimi to develop the best treatment plan for her. For example, because Mimi experienced gassiness, her dietitian suggested she divide up her vegetable juices and protein shakes throughout the day instead of drinking them all at once.
This kind of tailored advice and personalized plan helped Mimi stay committed to the program. She refused to let the side effects of her cancer and chemotherapy keep her down. With the help of her team, she was able to manage her digestive issues and take back control of her health.
